Past and Present
Irene Matthews
September 11–17, 2026
Past and Present brings together places, people and moments that carry the marks of time.
Irene Matthews is drawn to what has been used, lived in and changed: weathered buildings, working boats, familiar streets, people on the flats and the intimacy of an interior. Her loose brushwork and unexpected color give these familiar subjects a life of their own.
In Evening Stroll, buildings, vegetation and figures crowd into a narrow passage toward the water, turning a familiar coastal scene into something immediate and personal.

“My paintings are the golden light: in nature, in places I've explored, and in the people I love. They are rough with imperfections. Old worn-down buildings that still hold beauty and memories. Beauty isn't perfect.” — Irene Matthews
