"There are moments when sky and earth resonate. That duet is what I attempt to capture. Everything else is accompaniment."— Ed Walsh
In this new body of work, Ed Walsh turns his attention to the tidal flats and harbor of Provincetown at those hours when light takes center stage. We all savor these fleeting moments — dawn breaking through cloud cover, afternoon sun playing across rippling water, the last rays draining from the sky as the tide ebbs.
Each painting is a study in the syntax of illumination.
The anchor painting of the exhibition. A single, yellow-hulled sailboat grounded at low tide holds the composition against a dramatic sky. Warm ochres and oranges break through layered clouds, reducing the entire harbor to its essential tones.
Facing the Light is the most abstract statement in the series. Pilings provide the rhythm — dark verticals marking time against the water — while the light itself is dazzling, insistent, and nearly tactile. The Long Point lighthouse is just visible in the distance, a quiet indicator of the sun's angle.
The painting below moves from sensation to stillness. Provincetown Morning Light is Walsh at his most restrained. The same harbor is rendered at that magic hour before the light has fully chosen its palette.
About the Artist
Ed Walsh is a resident artist at Gallery 193 ArtSpace in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he maintains a working studio open to visitors throughout the season. His paintings center on the landscape and seascapes of the Outer Cape — its harbors, tidal flats, and the particular quality of light that has drawn painters to this place for more than a century.
Walsh works in acrylic, building paintings through layered observation of locations across changing weather and tide. Like the generations of artists before him, he never tires of exploring the unlimited possibilities offered by this narrow strip of sand, the ocean that embraces it, and the light that defines it.
The Language of Light is his 2026 solo exhibition at Gallery 193 ArtSpace.
